What is UMF™?

UMF™ (Unique Manuka Factor) is the only independent New Zealand certification system for the quality and authenticity of Manuka honey. The licence is granted by the UMF Honey Association (umf.org.nz), and every licensed honey is independently laboratory-tested.

What UMF measures (a 4-factor test)

  • MGO (methylglyoxal) – the main active component that determines strength.
  • Leptosperin – proves the honey is genuinely Manuka (it cannot be added artificially).
  • DHA – indicates the honey’s maturity and shelf life.
  • HMF – a freshness indicator.

How to recognise GENUINE Manuka honey

A genuine UMF honey label always shows: the UMF rating (e.g. UMF 10+); the licence holder and licence number; the New Zealand origin; and the MGO value. If any of these are missing, it may not be authentic Manuka honey.
